How it Works

There are two ways to connect Trace to Buoy Zone

Connect with an event

This is our recommended approach, especially if you plan ahead. Participants can join their fleet early, see all the relevant event information and who else is participating.

Events also allow race committees move fleets between courses when needed. Photos and media can easily be shared for the event and it keeps things simple for Race Officers and participants.

Connect without an event

Use this approach if you want to quickly get a race linked with Trace and head out on the water. Useful for smaller ad-hoc racing days.

Connecting with an event

Step 1.

A club administrator creates an event in Buoy Zone.

As part of the event creation, the club administrator creates all the fleets that may be participating in the event. Every event must have a least one fleet.

On race day (or up to a week before) the Race office can create a Course on Buoy Zone, link to the event and assign the fleets for their course.

A race participant can "Join the entries" from the events page as soon as the event is published.

The race officers on the day (or up to. week before) start a course then:

Link to the event
Select the fleets for their course
Set the courses, including the mark rounding orders

The race committee can see all linked Traces in the Buoy Zone App

List all competitors per fleet and see their distance to you or any mark on the course, useful for the finish boat to see the order of boats as they approach the finish line, or the RO from the start line looking to get another race underway.
View all competitors on a map, filtered by fleet

Trace users can see the course marks on their Trace

When competitors, spectators and coaches view their traces (live or post racing) they can see all the Marks from the course including all course updates.
Spectators can view racing in real-time, on the app or via a browser.

Connecting without an event

A Race Officer creates a standard course in Buoy Zone

Optionally the RO can add all the fleet names for your course (eg Gold, Silver)

A competitor starts a Trace in the Trace app

When starting a Trace they select "Join Course", choose their course and select their fleet, if the race officer has set any.
Add your sail or bib number
Start recording your Trace, go out on the water, keeping your mobile with you.
